When was the last time you took a moment to give thanks for your
freedom? If you’re like most of us, we often take our freedom for
granted. When devoting a few minutes to ponder our freedoms, it
doesn’t take long to see just how many of them we have to be
grateful for: freedom of opinion, freedom of speech, freedom to
vote, and freedom to choose, just to name a few.
A few nights ago, I had the chance to witness the freedom and power
of democracy at its best. I watched as my 7-year-old daughter
addressed our Town Trustees and an audience of over 100 people in
her plea to protect the wildlife that inhabit a meadow near our
home. I was inspired as she spoke with passion and conviction about
her love for the animals (and insects) and the importance of
standing up for what you believe.
I’ve never been so proud of her, nor the community and the country
in which I live. It was a great opportunity for all of us to be
reminded of the importance of speaking our truth, regardless of
whether we are in the majority or not. As I told my daughter--true
power is in speaking our truth from our heart and not in whether we
win or lose.
I was also reminded that when we allow our heart (and not our head)
to guide us, that amazing things happen.
Imagine a world where our hearts ruled and our heads were mostly
there for the ride. Imagine the alliances that would be formed and
the manifestations that could come from those partnerships. Imagine
interactions that would be win-win focused and where the goal would
be one of cooperation and mutual respect. Imagine the miracles that
could and would occur.
Freedom and democracy are gifts to cherish. To me, the freedom of
choice to live fully from my heart is indeed the greatest gift of
all. In doing so, I know that I am living the life I came here to
live. By allowing my heart to lead, my life blossoms with passion,
purpose and excitement. What could be better than that?
Wishing you a week filled with freedom and choice,
